DETROIT RED TAIL

TORCHBEARER of the Legacy

HONORING THE NATION'S FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN

MILITARY AVIATORS IN A UNIQUE WAY

“Red Tails” was the nickname given to the 332nd Fighter Group of World War II. It was done so because the tails of their P-47 Thunderbolt fighter planes (June 1944) and then their P-51 Mustang fighter planes (July 1944) were painted RED for aerial identification by the bomber groups that were being escorted by the 15th Air Force.

It WAS a 15th Air Force directive that the 332nd Fighter Group paint the tails of their planes RED.

Each of the 15th Air Force’s seven (7) fighter groups were designated with specific color schemes for aerial identification purposes. For example, the 52nd Fighter Group had Yellow tails, the 325th had checkerboard Yellow & Black tails and the 31st had striped tails.

Because of their admirable, dedicated, disciplined and award-winning performances, the 332nd Fighter Group became known as the “Red-Tailed Angels” and were eventually simply referred to as the “Red-Tails” by the bomber groups, who felt so comfortable with their committed and disciplined service that they actually began to request them.
